Cowgirls look to rebound with first of two consecutive at home
LARAMIE – The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team looks to get back into the win column as they return home for a Saturday contest against San Diego State. The Cowgirls and Aztecs tip at 2 p.m., from the Arena-Auditorium.
ABOUT THE COWGIRLS
Wyoming (8-7, 2-1 MW) suffered its first setback in Mountain West play Wednesday night with a 73-67 loss at New Mexico. Despite shooting 52-percent from the floor and assisting on 21 of its 25 made shots, UW couldn't get enough stops in the loss. Allyson Fertig led the Cowgirls with 17 points while Tess Barnes and Malene Pedersen scored 15 and 14, respectively while shooting a combined 50-percent from the floor, 5-for-8 from 3-point range and hitting all six of their free-throw attempts. Pedersen also tied a career-high with seven assists in the loss while Ola Ustowska dished out six assists to set a new season-best for her.
Through all games in 2024-25, Fertig leads the league in scoring at 18 points per game while her 9.7 rebounds a contest ranks second. Fertig also leads the league shooting 59-percent from the floor. In conference play, the scoring and rebounding marks both rank fourth while the shooting is even better at 63.6-percent, which also leads the MW. Barnes' 1.92 made 3-pointers per game ranks sixth in the conference. Emily Mellema ranks fifth in the Mountain West in both assist-to-turnover ratio (1.39) and assists per game (3.3). Through three league games, Mellema and Pedersen are tied for fourth in the league with 3.7 assists per contest while Pedersen's 2.8 assist-to-turnover ratio is a league-leading 2.8.
As a team on the season, Wyoming's 44.2-percent field goal shooting is second in the league. The Cowgirls rank third in rebounding margin (2.8), assists (15.3) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.09). Over the last six games, Wyoming is averaging 18.3 assists per game, including two contests with 20-plus assists. The Cowgirls have assisted on 69-percent of their field goals over that six-game stretch.
SCOUTING SAN DIEGO STATE
San Diego State has a balanced offensive attack with three averaging at least 10.2 points per game. Five more Aztecs are scoring six-or-more a contest. Adryana Quezada leads the way at 11.4 points per game. Veronica Sheffey leads the team with 48 assists on the year while in the rebounding category, Cali Clark's 8.3 per game leads SDSU. Clark also leads the team with 30 steals and 26 blocks on the season.
The Aztecs are averaging 71.4 points per game and have a plus-12 scoring margin as opponents are scoring just 59.4 a contest. San Diego State is shooting 42.7-percent from the field and nearly 35-percent from 3-point range. Aztec opponents are shooting 39.1-percent overall from the floor and an even 30-percent from beyond-the-arc. SDSU has a plus-0.5 rebounding margin and is forcing opponents into nearly six more turnovers a contest. The Aztecs also average better than three assists per contest than their opponents. San Diego State has won 5-of-6 on the road this season, which marks the first time since 1996-97 it has accomplished that feat.
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST SAN DIEGO STATE
Wyoming leads the all-time series 37-31. The two teams split last season's meetings with each winning at home. The Cowgirls have won 7-of-9 in the series dating back to the 2019-20 season. UW is 24-8 at home all-time against San Diego State and has won eight of the last nine in the series in Laramie.
