Give Thanks, Shop Locally

We at the Saratoga Sun have much for which we are thankful.

For 137 years, the Saratoga Sun has had the honor and the privilege to serve the fine people of the Platte Valley. The weight of that responsibility is not lost on us, especially as we go through our archive when compiling ‘Reflections from Our Files’ each week. Even 100 years ago, there are names which are recognizable.

It is humbling to see the articles on town council meetings, local events and high school sports over the past century and knowing that our own articles will be bound and join these others as a historical record.

None of this would happen, however, if it wasn’t for our loyal readers and advertisers. It is because of you that, each week, we are able to put out a product we are proud of and one we hope you are proud of as well. It has often been said that a community needs a newspaper, but we have discovered over the years that a newspaper needs its community.

We continue to look forward to bringing you local news and sports, the features on the People of the Platte you’ve told us you love to read and advertising from your local businesses.

Speaking of your local businesses, you will find them in our annual Christmas Candle this week. We are lucky, here in the Platte Valley, to have so many locally owned businesses. It is rare these days to find communities like ours where Main Street is alive and well and not having to compete with corporate chains or Big Box stores. It’s something we should be thankful for all year round, but especially during commerce days like Black Friday and Shop Small Saturday.

This year, we’ve worked to not only include ads from your local Main Street businesses, but to highlight the wonderful things they carry. We are thankful for the cooperation of these businesses as we worked to find a little something for everyone when you are doing your post-Thanksgiving holiday shopping. As we worked on the articles for the Christmas Candle, it was a delight to see all the great things which can be found in our own Valley. We hope you will, too.

We encourage you to give thanks to our wonderful Main Street businesses this year by keeping your money local. Spending your money with a local business keeps them around, helps them keep staff and keeps our local economy stable.
