My Voice In America's Democracy

*Editor's Note: McKinley Martin won the local Patriot's Pen contest. We have reprinted her entry here for our readers.*

What is democracy you may ask? It is a system of government by the whole population where voting can make changes if the people don’t agree with the laws and government. Gerald Stanley Lee said that “America is a tune. It must be sung together.” If we sing together then all the people’s voices, including my voice, will be heard in American Democracy.

Voting is important because we have a responsibility to choose a president who will care about the veterans and help make our country a better place to live in. Voting can be challenging because we have to think about the country, the states, and the people that our choices will affect. We can show our respect for the veterans who helped protect our country

by voting for leaders who will make positive changes for America. I can use my voice to speak up for different people and encourage our leaders to make the right decisions. Voting is one way my voice is heard in America’s Democracy.

Abraham Lincoln was very successful as a president because he worked to help all the people in our country. Lincoln once said, “If you want to test a man’s character, give him a voice”. Lincoln used his voice to speak for equality and liberty for every citizen. Like Lincoln, my voice can be heard speaking up for others who need support in America’s

Democracy.

Teachers are an important part of American democracy because that is how young people will know how to use their voices to help our country. It is important to learn about American history so we can build on our successes and avoid the mistakes of the past. With our knowledge and our power to vote, my generation can make a change and build a more positive America.

In conclusion, my voice is important in American democracy because people need to hear the ideas of all of the American citizens. I am a young citizen, and I am learning the ways my voice is important in my school and my community. If I can use my voice in topics that matter to me, there will be more voices in the schools, the states, and the government to keep our democracy strong.
