Saratoga deals 60-point loss to Cheyenne South JV team for home opener
Under new leadership, the Panthers stormed the field Thursday September 5 with a decisive victory against Cheyenne South Junior Varsity (CSJV)—winning 67-7.
Jared Mason, new head coach for the 2024 season, said “It was an exciting first win for the Panthers football team over Cheyenne South JV. In addition to the win, and a boost in confidence, valuable experience was gained by our young players who got lots of playing time."
The Panthers obviously have a very good running game, as they ran for 300 yards. Brody Johnson scored the first touchdown of the season with 07:26 remaining in the first quarter. From there, the score kept racking up.
The running attack was highlighted by Hunter Johnston's 133 yards and 2 touchdowns. Hazen Williams was close behind with 117 yards and 2 scores of his own.
Quarterback Jace Westring was 3 for 4 passing for 54 yards and 1 touchdown.
The Panther defense was formidable, holding CSJV to 181 total yards. Senior Skyler Wood led with 10 tackles and 5 assists. Saratoga's defensive scheme also resulted in CSJV giving up 5 interceptions on the day and forcing 6 tackles for loss.
"It was a positive first step, but we know the competition will only get better so we too will have to keep working hard to improve,” said Mason.
The Saratoga Panthers will next compete in Wind River at 6:00 p.m. September 13.
