Attempted traffic stop turned high speed chase ends with death of young Saratoga man
A Saratoga man is dead following a high speed car chase which began as an attempted traffic stop in Saratoga and ended in Centennial on the night of July 24.
According to information provided by the Wyoming Highway Patrol, an officer with the Saratoga Police Department attempted to stop a green and gold Subaru Outback with no registration for speeding. The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Ayden LeCureux, refused to stop and drove recklessly through downtown Saratoga. At times, LeCureux reached speeds of 60 miles per hour before leaving the downtown area and heading down Wyoming Highway 130.
With a Saratoga Police Department officer still in pursuit, LeCureux drove over the Snowy Range and into Albany County. During the pursuit, the officer requested help from troopers with the Wyoming Highway Patrol and deputies with the Albany County Sheriff’s Office. The troopers and deputies intercepted LeCureux west of Centennial as he drove through and continued east. Spike strips were deployed by deputies with the Albany County Sheriff’s Office at milepost 25, which deflated the two front tires of the Outback.
According to the information provided by the Wyoming Highway Patrol, LeCureux pulled over to the right side of the road, stopped and took his own life just after responding officers began giving commands. Despite troopers attempting CPR, LeCureux was pronounced dead at the scene. He was 18 years old.
As of press time, the investigation remains open pending autopsy and coroner’s reports..
The Wyoming Highway Patrol and Saratoga Police Department acknowledge the aid of the Albany and Carbon County Sheriff’s offices, EMS units from rural and Laramie Fire and the Albany County Coroner’s Office.
The responding units extended their condolences to the family of LeCureux. A GoFundMe has been set up to aid LeCureux’s family at https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-ayden-lecureuxs-memorial-costs.
A candlelight vigil for LeCureux will be held at 9 p.m. on August 2 at Veterans’ Island in Saratoga.
