A Taste of Adventure

Saratoga Sandwich Company gives customers a variety of options to take on their next adventure in the Platte Valley

The Platte Valley is filled with countless things to do regardless of the season. Floating the Platte and Encampment rivers or hiking in the summer, snowmobiling or cross-country skiing in the winter or fishing throughout the year, adventure awaits.

With so much to do, and often so little time, it’s important to find a place for breakfast or lunch which can get you on your way. Look no further than Saratoga Sandwich Company, one of three restaurants owned by Tommy and Cassie Orduno. Started in 2020 in the midst of the pandemic, the Saratoga Sandwich Company offers a variety of hot and cold sandwiches for those needing to make their meals portable.

If you’re starting your adventure early in the morning, there are a few options to help break your fast and give you the start you need for the day. There are sandwiches on the more traditional side, including the restaurant’s own take on the egg and English muffin which was made popular by a particular fast-food chain.

Two wonderful, and entirely different sandwiches from each other, are the Smoke & Fire and the Loaded New Yorker.

The Smoke & Fire is egg, smoked bacon, melted 3-pepper Colby cheese and chili spread on a toasted English muffin. If you’re wanting to really kickstart your day then this is the sandwich to go with. The 3-pepper Colby cheese and the chili spread certainly bring some heat to the morning, cutting through the fattiness of the egg. If an English muffin isn’t your preferred vehicle for delivering this spicy, savory goodness you can always change it up. An everything bagel makes a good replacement for the English muffin.

The Loaded New Yorker, meanwhile, brings a taste of the cosmopolitan to the Rural West and is the Saratoga Sandwich Company’s take on a lox and schmear. Lox is a filet of brined salmon, but in the case of this sandwich the salmon is smoked. Cream cheese, pickled red onions, cucumbers, capers and dill join the smoked salmon on an everything bagel to make for a flavorful bite. The pickled red onions are a great balance to the cream cheese and help bring out the flavor of the smoked salmon.

The Smoke & Fire is served warm while the Loaded New Yorker is served cold, something to keep in mind when you order.

When it comes to lunch, there is no shortage of choices, either. Again, customers have a choice of both hot and cold sandwiches.

The John Tuna, one of the deli sandwiches, is something which must absolutely be tried. Tuna salad sandwiches may seem like a pretty simple meal to have on a menu, but Saratoga Sandwich Company takes it and elevates it to another level. The tuna salad is made with celery, dill, sweet pickles and red onion. It is joined on a toasted white bread with spring greens and mozzarella cheese.

When ordering this, don’t expect a small sandwich with a few spoonfuls of tuna salad. Just like any other sandwich on the menu, there is plenty stuffed between the two slices of white bread. It can be a little messy, so make sure to keep a napkin handy.

As for hot sandwiches, there are two amazing options among the already wonderful choices.

The Bacon Chicken Ranch—or BCR—is grilled chicken breast, bacon, Vermont cheddar, ranch mayo, greens and tomato stuffed in a brioche bun. The sharpness of the Vermont cheddar and the ranch mayo do well in cutting through the savoriness of the chicken and bacon. The brioche bun is light and airy, so it doesn’t add to the slight heaviness the proteins will bring. The only major issue with this sandwich is that it just doesn’t last long enough.

Another hot sandwich option is the Steakhouse Melt, not to be confused with the French Creek Dip which is another great option.

The Steakhouse Melt is London Broil Roast Beef, melted mozzarella, bleu cheese and caramelized onions on a hoagie. The bleu cheese is a wonderful addition to this sandwich as it works well with the roast beef and caramelized onions. The roast beef is no slouch either and is filled with flavor.

It’s hard to go wrong with anything on the menu at Saratoga Sandwich Company. Additionally, the service is friendly and expedient and you’ll find yourself out on your next adventure before you know it.

The Saratoga Sandwich Company is located at 104 W. Bridge Avenue in Saratoga, Wyoming. They are open from 6:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday.
