Carbon County Rubber Check Race prepares for inaugural season at Encampment rodeo grounds

It's a crazy race with horsepower on four legs, four wheels and a wheelbarrow.

The inaugural Carbon County Rubber Check Race will take place at Encampment -Riverside Lions Club Rodeo Arena on Saturday, June 29.

Samantha Buffington, event organizer, said this is a relay race with a challenge.

“It is a ranch relay which consists of four teams,” Buffington said. “The goal is to get the batton across the finish line as fast as possible. There are two horse riders with a rider on a four-wheeler and a guy pushing a wheelbarrow. These contestants must do it in under two minutes, so it's fast.”

Buffington said she saw a race while living in Cheyenne and thought it would be a great event to bring to Carbon County.

“When I was living in Cheyenne, I watched a rubber check race at the county fair,” Buffington said. “It was a blast to watch and I have been trying hard to get a rubber check race organized in Carbon County. I decided I had a little more time on my hands so here we are.”

Buffington said each contestant can win different prizes. and would be rewarded up to third place.

“We are going to pay out three places,” Buffington said. “The first-place winner will get hats, sweaters, cups, and cash. The second-place winner will get sweaters and cash. Third place will receive hats and cash.”

Buffington said all proceeds will go to the Carbon County Search and Rescue.
