Serving the Platte Valley since 1888
Patricia “Susan” Speer of Becker, MN, formerly of Kerrville, TX and Saratoga, WY, passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, at the age of 80. She was born on April 9, 1944, in Ada, OK. Susan moved as a child where she grew up in her beloved state of Texas.
Susan graduated from high school in London, England in 1962, where she was living abroad with her family. She talked of her time in England with such fondness, it’s no wonder why her favorite shows were “The Crown” and “Downton Abbey”.
Susan worked as a Century 21 real estate broker and agent for over 30 years in Saratoga, WY. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and crafting classes and groups, real estate committees, and museum and art galleries in Saratoga, WY.
Susan is preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, Will Speer; grandson, Travis Rogers; twin brother, Harvey “Sammy” McArthur; parents, Patricia and Harvey McArthur; beloved favorite aunt, Jean Arnold. She is survived by her three children, Mark (Blake) Rogers, of Ft. Meyers, FL, Cindy (Jeff) Marholz, of Becker, MN, Tyler Rogers, of Sapulpa, OK; stepson, Jeff Speer, of Washington; sisters, Martha Goff, of Austin, TX, Judy Acott, of Ft. Collins, CO; as well as seven grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
Our mom was an avid quilter and seamstress throughout her whole life. All of her grandchildren were blessed with baptismal gowns and fun clothes she loved to make them when they were little. We also all have “Susie” quilts in our home that she so proudly worked on. She loved to spend the day reading, relaxing, sitting in the sun and watching birds. Mom loved being a fur mama and adored all of her pets throughout her life. She leaves behind Angel, the Golden Retriever, who has spent the last few years in Oklahoma with Tyler and Smokey, the cat, who has miraculously survived four state moves and now lives in Becker with Cindy.
Mom’s favorite hobby was shopping! Most of all with her sisters, Martha and Judy, on their once a year girl’s get together. Talbots and Chico’s will never be the same without her. She loved birds and left behind lots of bird decor for us to remember her by as well as her beloved Texas bluebonnets and anything Texas.
Mom’s favorite food was chocolate. Chocolate for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and dessert! Mexican was her go-to for dinners out, always ordering chicken enchiladas.
Mom had a great sense of humor and could be known to be a little “spicy” sometimes. She loved to laugh and smile, never letting things get her too down. She accepted things as they were and didn’t fuss about changing things. Mom was very giving, she was always willing to share something, make something, or get something that you would need. It brought her joy to take all the families out to dinner.
Mom recently celebrated her 80th birthday with a party. She was so modest and kept insisting she didn’t need to be celebrated, but she did. Tears fell when she blew out her candles on her birthday cheesecake, and peanut butter pie.
Mom’s reply to every “I love you” was “I love you too sweetheart” and she showed us all how much she loved us. She will be dearly missed, but never forgotten. We love you.
The family would like to thank Vicky Koening and Angie Thomas for the love and compassion they showed our mom as her morning caretakers. She enjoyed you, even when she didn’t want to take her meds or go for a walk. You were her friends and we are forever grateful for the love you showed her.
A small memorial and burial will be in Saratoga, WY, next to her husband, Will, in July 2024.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Susan’s honor to The Alzheimer’s Association, suicide prevention, or local animal rescue organizations.
