Cowgirls Open Mountain West Tennis Championship Thursday

Wyoming faces winner of Air Force and Colorado State

Series: Staff Report | Story 1

The Wyoming Cowgirl tennis team travels to Las Vegas for the 2024 Mountain West Tennis Championships this week. The Cowgirls are the No. 3 seed at the tournament and will face the winner of sixth-seeded Colorado State and the No. 11 seed Air Force Thursday at 3 p.m., Mountain Time.

Wyoming (16-9, 7-3 MW) finished the regular season with a 4-2 victory on the road at Colorado State last week. After dropping the doubles point to the Rams, the Cowgirls rallied to win 4-of-5 completed singles matches on the day to come away with some end-of-season momentum. UW got wins at the No. 1, 3, 4 and 5 singles spots in the victory.

With her win at No. 1, Sophie Zehender is now tied for the team-lead with 17 dual wins in 2024 and finishes the season 8-2 in conference play, which leads the Cowgirls. Violetta Borodina (No. 3), Jeselle Ante (No. 4) and Nikol Dobrilova (No. 5) got the other singles victories for Wyoming. Ante was named the league’s Freshman of the Week Monday behind the strength of her 6-1, 6-3 win. Ante and her doubles partner, Lucia Malinak, got UW’s lone doubles win against CSU as well. It marked the first time this season that a Cowgirl has received a weekly honor.

This week will be the 11th trip to the Mountain West Tournament for the Cowgirls under Head Coach Dean Clower. Wyoming has won at least one match at the MW Championship nine of the 10 previous trips under Clower.
