Candle making is an ancient art. Historians calculate it at over 5,000 years old. For centuries candles served as the primary source of indoor illumination. The concept of scented candles is often credited to the American colonies. Early residents along the New England coast began infusing Bayberry into their candles, and a new generation of candles had been created. Now the candle offered the dual purpose of light and aroma. As technology ushered in different lighting methods candle making began to fade to some degree, but then in the 1950’s there was a resurgence in demand. Candles began to have consideration for a third purpose - there was the original illumination, then fragrance, and now decoration. That brings us to today where candles are a multi-billion dollar business. Some estimates place it in excess of 5 billion dollars worldwide. There are a number of large industrial level manufacturers, like Yankee Candles. And, there are boutique companies making carefully crafted offerings, like Audi-Anne.
Kristin announced her company this past March, after extensive research on different candle making methods and the wide range of materials that are involved. Candle making is a delicate process. The temperature must be carefully controlled, and each ingredient has to be added at a specific temp to ensure an even burn, and a satisfying scent throw.
The Audi-Anne target market is the Platte River Valley and Carbon County. There are no plans to open a store front right now but Kristin does attend craft shows, fairs and was at the Saratoga Farmer’s Market. The local efforts are complemented by social media marketing on Facebook and Instagram. Audi-Anne has received orders from as far away as South Carolina and Florida. Her Citronella line is carried at Koyoty Sports on Bridge Avenue in Saratoga.
Kristin will have a booth at Taste of Wyoming Food Truck & Vendor Show in Rawlins on October 7, and at Aspen & Sage Market Days in Encampment October 20 & 21. She is also organizing a Sip & Smell gathering. Check out the Facebook page of Audi-Anne Candles for details, or to place an order.
