Serving the Platte Valley since 1888
Virginia Parker tapped to lead the Saratoga Sun
Virginia Parker was recently promoted to the role of editor/publisher at the Saratoga Sun and will be running the community newspaper, which is in its 135th year of covering the Platte Valley.
Parker began working for the Sun in August 2022, but is no stranger to the communities of the Valley. Over the years, she has worked for the Saratoga Museum, the Saratoga High School and the Saratoga Police Department.
She has also donated a significant amount of her time in volunteer work such as the Grand Encampment Cowboy Gathering and the Platte Valley Ministerial Association. According to Joshua Wood, operations director for Stevenson Newspapers, it was this involvement in the community which helped the company make its decision.
"Virginia is heavily involved in the communities of both Encampment and Saratoga," said Wood. "Her connections in the Valley will serve her well in leading the newspaper going forward. Virginia has a vested interest in this community as not only her children grew up here, but her grandchildren are as well."
Wood, who was promoted to operations director in January, still resides in Saratoga but is now over 17 publications across the region for Stevenson Newspapers. For the immediate future, he will be taking Parker under his wing to show her the ins-and-outs of the newspaper.
Parker is beginning her time as publisher by requesting more community engagement with the newspaper.
"We want to know about all the things going on in the community," said Parker. "Especially group meetings that are of benefit to the community such as those focused on maintaining sobriety so we can add them to our community calendar to help others in need."
