Lady Miners bested by Lady Chiefs

HEM fought hard in every set but came up short in the end

On Friday, the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School volleyball team hosted the Wyoming Indian High School Lady Chiefs and lost all three sets. The Lady Miners were in contention in all three games until they hit double digits.  Then the Lady Chiefs surged ahead, leaving HEM to score a few points, but not enough to threaten Wyoming Indian as they would go on to win.

The first set, the Miners were down 1 to 6 and then rallied to tie at 7 to 7 to the home crowd's delight. The Lady Miners kept it up until both were tied at 11. Then the Lady Chiefs had a spurt getting them to 20.

Hanna Gonzales served to get the Lady Miners to 15 before the Lady Chiefs got some points up on the board. The set went to the Lady Chiefs 25 to 17.

"It is hard when we are doing so well and then we end up beating ourselves," Head Coach Hannah Williams said. "We had some excellent moments where we were ahead and then we couldn't maintain."

The next set was almost a repeat of the first set. The Lady Miners got behind six points in the beginning. Then Sara Sikes served well and before the happy home crowd knew it, the set was tied 9 to 9.

Once the score went to 10, the Lady Chiefs started winning points. Wyoming Indian won the 2nd set 25 to 15.

The next set was remarkably better for the Lady Miners in the beginning. They were ahead three points from the onset and continued until they reached 11. Then they stalled and Wyoming Indian took full advantage, taking away the lead.

The Lady Miners battled hard and were at 19 with Wyoming Indian at 23. The crowd was hopeful for a rally. Although the Lady Miners did score one more point, they lost 25 to 20.

"There are really a lot of great things that happened in the game, but at the end of the day, emotions were high and it was senior recognition night," Williams said. "Whatever it was, we played well for a bit of time and then we didn't and sets were lost that way." Williams said the team needed to get ready for regionals and look forward not backwards."I am excited, we play our first game at 9 a.m.," Williams said. "But we are still not sure who we are playing because there was an upset in the north, which is kind of exciting. There is a chance we might be playing Hulett which would be exciting too because we kept up with them when we played them in Lusk earlier this year. No matter who we play, I believe we will give them a good game."

Regionals start on October 28.
