The Continuity of The Country Store

Passing the torch

by Ezra Boileau

Kathleen Martin, owner, and manager of the County Store has decided to step back from her role. Martin, who celebrated her 35th year at the store on June 1, has decided to pass the torch to her daughter, Megan Martin, and her husband, Jay Buszkiewic.

This change in management marks the third generation of family ownership, as Kathleen inherited it from her father, Valle Evans, back in 1987. Kathleen considered selling the store but decided to offer Megan and Jay the opportunity to take it over. Megan said that she wanted the store to stay in the family, "I always made remarks to my mom when I lived in Laramie, like, 'let me know when you're done with the store because I would like to take it on.'"

After being asked to take over by Kathleen, the couple deliberated for only a week before deciding to move back to Saratoga to continue the store's family line, with a tentative date of July 1 marking their transition into full management. When discussing running the store Megan said, "I had no idea how much work it actually is until I started doing it, and now I'm wondering how mom did it by herself for 35 years. It's pretty impressive;" A true testament to Kathleen's work ethic and contribution to the town over the years.

When asked how she felt about retiring from the store Kathleen stated, "It really is not bittersweet at all like I thought it was going to be because I'm still kind of involved and I know that they [Megan and Jay] are capable and bright, so I'm not worried about anything as far as the operation is concerned. They're inheriting some experienced and knowledgeable employees too, so they're real (sic) fortunate that way"

"Yes, absolutely," Megan replied. "We're learning from our employees."

When asked if he had any concerns Jay said, "With us as a team and with her [Kathleen] with us too, we're good." Kathleen expanded upon this statement saying, "They're really fortunate to have such a lovely community, the clientele is fabulous."

Megan and Jay are very appreciative of Kathleen's offer for them to take over the operations, as well for the community of Saratoga's support. Megan and Jay are looking forward to giving back to the community,

"Just like she (Kathleen) did, we help them, and they help us, and without them we can't exist," said Jay. "We have a month or two in the summer with lots of tourists, but the rest of the year it's all the locals that support us."

While Kathleen's chapter of the County Store ends, Megan and Jay's begins. They are very thankful to Kathleen for the opportunity, and the community that makes the Country Store what it is.

"Thirty-five successful years of business at the Country Store," said Megan of her mother's commitment to the business. "I am so inspired by my mom's amazing work ethic and the time she dedicated to her store. She is an amazing leader and role model. She overcame all challenges with strength, determination and confidence. She is transferring that power to me & Jay now and we are thankful for the opportunity!
