Miners dig in at regionals

Small HEM team has good showings in Newcastle

The small but mighty Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) track and field team traveled to Newcastle for the 1A East Regional Tournament over the weekend. Both the boys and girls did well, with the girls team placing 6th and the boys team placing 8th.

A number of individual placings also highlighted the weekend for the Miners.

HEM Girls at Regionals

Beginning with the 100 Meter Dash, Avery Scott took 4th place as she finished with a time of 13.45 seconds. Rainey Wilson followed in 8th place with a finishing time of 14.59 seconds. In the 200 Meter Dash, Scott again took 4th place with a time of 28.03 seconds.

The 400 Meter Dash saw Scott move ahead to 2nd place, where she finished with a time of 1 minute, 46.65 seconds. In the 800 Meter Run, Wilson took 4th place where she finished with a time of 2 minutes, 45.65 seconds.

Justine Widdison, meanwhile, finished in the top five in two hurdle events. In the 100 Meter Hurdles, Widdison placed 5th with a time of 18.71 seconds. Then, in the 300 Meter Hurdles, Widdison finished with a time of 52.63 seconds and took 5th place. Widdison also placed 6th in the long jump, finishing with a distance of 13 feet, 2 inches.

In other field events, Mackenzie Priest and Hanna Gonzales competed in shot put and discus. In the shot put, Priest threw for 22 feet, 10.25 inches to finish in 17th place. Gonzales, meanwhile, came in 21st place with a throw of 21 feet, 4 inches. In discus, Gonzales took 17th place with a throw of 59 feet, 9 inches while Priest came in 18th place throwing for a distance of 57 feet, 5 inches.

HEM Boys at Regionals

The HEM boys had a stronger showing in the field events than in the track events while in Newcastle. Jared Nelsen, however, finished in the top 10 for two long distance events. In the 1600 Meter Run, Nelsen finished in 6th place with a time of 5 minutes, 26.72 seconds. Nelsen took 3rd place in the 3200 Meter Run where he finished with a time of 11 minutes, 34.42 seconds.

In the long jump, Dylan Romero took 13th place with a distance of 15 feet, 7.5 inches.

Joseph Borah found himself in the top five for the shot put, placing 4th with a throw of 40 feet, 8.25 inches. Romero also competed in the shot put, coming in 21st place with a throw of 28 feet, 5.75 inches. Cody Priest threw for 26 feet, 3.5 inches and finished in 26th place.

In discus, Borah came in 11th place with a throw of 89 feet, 9 inches. Romero followed in 13th place, throwing for 85 feet, 6 inches and Priest took 21st place with a throw of 63 feet, 6 inches.

The Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow Miners will finish out their track and field season at the State Track and Field Meet in Casper this weekend.
