VSO scholarship open

Youth Citizenship Award will give $500 to one CCSD2 student

The Valley Service Organization (VSO) has, once again, opened up the Youth Citizenship Award for graduating seniors from Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD2).

This scholarship awards $500 each year to a senior selected by the VSO Award Committee.

VSO Chairwoman Cindy Walton has emphasized this scholarship is not based on grades. Instead, it is a cash award given directly to the student for their “community service and understanding of what it is to be a good citizen”.

The award is open to graduating seniors from Saratoga Middle/High School, Encampment K-12 School, Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Junior/Senior High School and home schooled students. Unlike other scholarships, the money from the Youth Citizenship Award can be spent however and on whatever the recipient desires.

The application for the Youth Citizenship Award asks students to describe their community involvement and activities and their goals after high school. Students are also asked to explain their definition of citizenship, how they have applied the concept during their school years and how they plan to explimpify citizenship as an adult. A letter of reference must accompany the application.

Graduating seniors may obtain an application through their respective guidance counselor or by emailing Walton at [email protected] or by calling 307-329-8815. Completed applications must be returned by May 15, 2022 to P.O. Box 1601 Saratoga, WY 82331.

Saratoga’s Teegan Love was the recipient of the Youth Citizenship Award in 2021.
