Trophy for State track comes to Hanna for first time in four decades
For the first in 37 years, the Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School girls track and field team brought home a trophy from State. The team came in 4th place.
Head Coach Jackie Jones pointed out they missed being 3rd by one point. Third place Kaycee accumulated 65 points while HEM received 64.
Two of the team members placed 1st in individual competition.
Taylar Scott took the top spot in the triple jump with a distance of 34 feet, 3 inches.
and Amy Campbell threw further than her competitor Lizzie James from Encampment by 2 inches at 105 feet and 4 inches in discus to come in 1st .
Jones said that A. Campbell has strived to improve since her sophomore year where she barely missed placing.
"Amy's commitment to learning the technique to improve with Cliff (assistant coach Cliff Jones) has been astounding," Jones said. "Her goal quietly this year was to be regional champion. She did it and, knowing Amy, she set her goal a little higher when she competed in State."
Jones said throwing the disc versus the shot put requires a little more technique with footwork versus brute strength.
"In the prelims at State she threw a 104 feet and 8 inches and was 1st," Jones said. "She and Lizzie James have a competitive type thing between the two of them. Amy has never beaten Lizzie at a meet in her career."
James beat A. Campbell's prelim score with a 105 feet and 2 inches.
"We knew she had a big throw in her and she stepped up and proved it by two inches," Jones said. "Both girls ended up hugging each other and crying. It was amazing."
T. Scott not only placed 1st in the triple jump; she came in 3rd in the 100 meter dash with a time of 13.60 and 3rd in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.44.
The girls relay teams also did very well.
The team that ran in the 4 X 400 meter relay came in 2nd with a time of 4:26.19. The team consisted of T. Scott, Avery Scott, Madison Campbell and T'lyssa Solaas.
The team that ran the 4 X 800 meter relay came in 2nd with a time of 11:03.52. This team consisted of M. Campbell, A. Scott, Solaas and Rainey Wilson. The same team ran in the 1600 meter sprint medley and came in 2nd with a time of 4:49.11.
More points for the girls came from A. Scott who came in 5th in the 400 meter run with a time of 1:02.26.
Solaas came in 5th in the 100 meter hurdle race with a time of 18.13 seconds.
"Six girls were able bring home a 4th place trophy," Jones said. "It was a perfect ending for the girls team."
With T. Scott's 1st place finish and A. Campbell's 1st place finish, both girls earned All-State honors in all three sports. Jones said this was first for her to see in all of her years of coaching.
Jones was happy with Devon Grosstick and Joseph Borah who missed out on points, but got to 9th place in their competitions. Jones felt Ura Schmidt and Taylor Kennedy gave their best and she was happy to see them compete.
"The great part about those four boys was that they were at the events for the girls, cheering them on," Jones said. "And when the girls were presented the team trophy, they were as proud as the girls were."
Jones said it was a great ending to a great season.
