Miner track and field end regular season well
“The weather was great,” Hanna. Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School head track coach Jackie Jones said. “It was nice that in the 80 degree weather that we had a little cloud cover and it was probably the best day we have had all season.”
There were 20 teams that attended the Bobcat Invitational on Friday in Thermopolis.
Jones said several of the team members had some personal records (PR) at the track event.
“It is kind of customary at this Thermopolis meet to set some new PRs in different things,” Jones said.
She said senior Taylar Scott had a phenomenal day.
“Taylar ended up getting 2nd in the 200 and 3rd place in the 100 and the triple jump,” Jones said. “She set some PRs for the season and was able to get her 200 time down in the 26s, which is excellent.”
T. Scott’s reshman sister Avery Scott also had a good day.
“Avery ended up 6th in the 200 and 2nd 400,” Jones said. “In a meet of that caliber, it speaks well for her.”
Jones was pleased with Amy and Madison Campbell’s efforts.
“Amy placed 4th in disc and 6th in shot, and she definitely held her on against some very good competition,” Jones said. “Madison was able to place 6th in the 800. Maddie was also on the girls sprint medley team that came in 3rd.”
The relay team includes M. Campbell, Rainey Wilson, T’lyssa Solaas and A. Scott.
Jones said she had Solaas timed in the 110 hurdle placing 2nd, but due to some technical problems with the automatic time recorder, she was recorded placing 6th.
“It is understandable in a meet that size that there are some things that get lost in the shuffle,” Jones said. “We understand that. But I had T’lyssa timed in one of her best runs of the season. What really matters is that T’lyssa is looking good going into regionals and that she just has to continue to do as well.”
On the boys side of the team, Jones said Ura Schmidt set a PR in the shot put.
“That is a good thing heading into regionals,” Jones said. “We need to get Joseph (Borah) in the shot put a little more consistent in keeping himself in the ring. He has a tendency to throw himself out of the ring because he is throwing so hard. We are really going to focus on that this week.”
She said she will be putting the boys in different events when the team goes to regionals next week in Torrington.
“I don’t say his name a lot, but Aaron Barron has come so far for us this season,” Jones said. “In the beginning of the season, he thought he was a one and two runner, but he has spread his wings a little and we are toying with putting a relay team together for regionals where he and the others can have some fun and maybe have a showing.”
Jones feels the team is peaking at the right time.
“These kids are competitors,” Jones said. “We are excited and I think some of the kids are peaking which what a coach wants to happen. I think we have kids in great spots as times are coming down and distances are going up. We are ready to go.”
Regionals start this weekend in Torrington.
