Lady Miners Bury Opponents

“To be fair, all the teams that we played this weekend were young and we have a core of young ladies that are solid,” said Jackie Jones, Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Lady Miners head coach. “The team played very well this week too.”

They Lady Miners played very well indeed against three teams, one a conference opponent.

Glendo

On Friday, HEM went to Glendo to play a conference team at 4:30 p.m. The Lady Miners made quick work of the Lady Eagles in three sets. The 1st set the HEM team took no prisoners winning 25-4. The next set, the Lady Eagles got more points on the board, but it was HEM in control all the way winning 25-8.

“We were serving solid,” Jones said. “The other team just couldn’t get into an effective offense.”

The 3rd set was a repeat in the score, 25-8.

The win puts the Lady Miners 4-0 in their conference. They are currently in the top spot of the 1 A Southeast Conference.

Dubois

The next day had the Lady Miners on the road again. Their first stop was Dubois where they faced the Lady Rams at noon.

The 1st sethad the Lady Miners win 25-8.

Amy Campbell, who is playing sparingly to rest a leg injury that happened early in the season, had 17 first serving points.

“She was 100 percent,” Jones said. “Charla Widdison had an excellent hitting game.”

The next set had HEM best Dubois 25-8.

Jones put in other players the third match to give experience and the girls responded by winning 25-6.

Ten Sleep

Later in the afternoon, the Lady Miners faced off against the Lady Pioneers at 2 p.m. in Ten Sleep.

Jones said there was a tall player on the Ten Sleep team that gave her team a challenge but she was not enough to stop the surging Lady Miners. HEM won the 1st set 25-6.

“They were a young team and, again, we had solid serving,” Jones said. “Charla (Widdison) and Avery Scott both did an excellent job of hitting. It is hard to believe that Avery is just a freshman when watching her play.”

The 2nd match the Lady Pioneers put more points on the board but still lost 25-13.

“Maddison (Campbell) did a good job distributing the ball to the team,” Jones said. “Maddie is the equivalent of the quarterback on this team. She does an outstanding job.”

Taylor Scott had good games but, like A. Campbell, Jones rested her.

The last match, Ten Sleep scored the most points against the Lady Miners of all three teams this past weekend, but not enough to stop HEM. The score ended up 25-14.

The Lady Miners became 9-2 overall.

“We are fortunate to be in this position,” Jones said. “We have a good record and we have a team that is learning to play better with each other as time goes on.”

Jones said the week to come will challenge the Lady Miners.

They face Encampment, Rock River and Little Snake River Valley.

“These teams are all well coached and have good teams that can win. Encampment is a team no one should underrate,” Jones said. “We have our work cut out for us.”

Jones said the team is facing a tough schedule, but it pays off in the end.

The next scheduled game is at 6:15 p.m. on September 23 in Encampment.
