Better than a letter

Riverside Town Council fills vacant seat

The Riverside Town Council gained another council member at the August 13, 2020 meeting.

According to LeRoy Stephenson, Mayor of Riverside, Mark Helwick didn’t exactly submit a letter of interest for the open Town Council seats. Instead, he simply wrote “Yes, I am interested” on a Riverside public notice. Stephenson said, “as far as I am was concerned, that is better than any letter”.

Although, Helwick is currently on the primary election ballot as the only person running for Riverside Town Council, the Council voted to appoint Helwick to the seat vacated by Liz Swynarczuk. Stephenson administered the oath, making the appointment immediately active.

Lee Ann Stephenson, Sierra Modre Joint Powers Board (SMJPB) Representative, provided an update. The distribution from the Specific Purpose Tax has not yet been received. The SMJPB is going to go ahead with repairs to the stealth reader system which will bandage issues with the system until the meters can be replaced.

Lee Ann Stephenson also let the Council know that the part-time position for a waste water operator is still open.

Gateway South Impact Assistance Funds were also discussed. Since the Gateway transmission power line will run southeast of Sinclair along the interstate, then turn towards Baggs and cross a small section of Sweetwater County before going into Colorado, Stephenson stated that he did not see where there would be any impact to Riverside. The rest of the Council agreed and decided not to ask for impact funds. However, if funding was offered, the Council voted to accept. Mayor Stephenson will attend the meeting on August 25, 2020 to convey the Town Council’s wishes.

The next regular meeting of the Riverside Town Council will be at 6 p.m. on Monday, September 9, 2020 at the Riverside Town Hall.
