Hanna agriculture group continues work on personal and museum gardens

The Hanna Agricultural Resources Team (HART) had their July monthly meeting at 5 p.m. on July 6 at the Community Garden.

This is the second summer meeting for the group. The attendees looked over the gardens that are being cultivated by the different members. Most of the beds are thriving.

At the meeting Perry Goodrich, chairman of HART, talked about getting a new pump for the garden and suggested acquiring a small trailer for the group.

It was put forth by Linda Goodrich that although the current manner of filling the water tank was working, there might be a better way. The group decided to look at other ways of getting water for the community garden and coming back to the next meeting with their ideas.

The group will set a work day in September at the August meeting.

This month the group hopes to put in sand for the walkway at the Hanna Basin Museum. HART is replicating a garden that used to dot through the town. These flower gardens were competitive, with owners actually sabotaging neighbors yards for the honor of having the best garden in the community.

L. Goodrich has worked with the museum board to locate the type of historical plants that would have been in these gardens and should be cultivated.

The group wants to move the Community Garden sign closer to the garden. Currently the sign sits hundreds of yards away from the garden itself and many of the HART members feel it too distant. The large sign will be a strong undertaking and P. Goodrich is looking for volunteers to help with the move.

The group concluded the meeting with a request for members to think of different ideas to get the Future Farmers of America (FFA) to become more involved with the garden.

A date for the next August meeting is pending.
