Encampment graduate and Saratoga runner joins CWC's cross-country team
Jarom Herring, 2020 graduate of Encampment High School, was awarded a scholarship with Central Wyoming College (CWC) for cross country running with the option of competing in indoor and outdoor track.
Al Lara, Head Coach of Men's and Women's Cross Country at CWC, wanted to have a person-to-person signing with Herring two to three months ago. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic it was not possible until recently. Coach Lara said that he does not do a personal signing for every student stating, "These kids missed graduation, I've only done this for two kids so far, here and Loveland. We've got a heck of a kid here, heck of an athlete and individual."
Lara has been running the cross country program at CWC for seven years and only recruits students from Wyoming. He is a firm believer in supporting the state in which you live.
This season at CWC there will be 11 boys on the cross country team and the coach believes that six of them, including Herring, could be contenders for number one in the state. Additionally, Lara said, "This is the first time I have a mens team that I feel they could win regionals. We won regionals last year with the girls. This boys team is just an awesome team, Six guys could go alone. I'm sure he (Herring) is going to do great."
CWC will only have one home meet, the rest will be away with regionals in Alamosa, Colorado and Nationals in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. Lara is confident that Herring will qualify for nationals. The schedule for CWC cross country can be found at rustlerathletics.com.
Herring said that he is really excited about signing with CWC where he will study health sciences with the end goal of being a dentist.
