Tiger football takes down Longhorns

In first game of the season, Encampment returns home with a 45-15 victory over Meeteetse

For the first time in 29 years, the Encampment Tigers were able walk onto a football field wearing their school colors as they were hosted by the Meeteetse Longhorns on Saturday. Despite this being their first official outing, and initially trailing to the Longhorns, Encampment was able to turn the game around and head home with a victory.

"Meeteetse is a big and physical team," said Kegan Willford, head coach for the Encampment Tigers. "They came out and ran over us a little bit in the 1st quarter. We made some adjustments and our team never gave up and in, the 2nd quarter, we were able to gain the momentum. When that happened, we had 45 unanswered points."

The 1st quarter saw the Longhorns try and trample Encampment as they were able to get a touchdown and a conversion in. Meeteetse was able to do the same in the 2nd quarter as well, but the Tigers answered back with a 10 yard pass from Michael Anderson to Reid Schroeder for a 6 point conversion.

Following those first two quarters, Encampment took control of the field and didn't allow the Longhorns to score a single point in the second half of the game while scoring 27 of their own in the 3rd quarter and another 12 points in the 4th quarter.

Encampment junior Dalton Peterson led the Tigers in rushing with 8 rushes for a total of 31 yards and resulting in a touchdown. Peterson was also the receiving leader with 4 receptions across 98 yards. In receiving, Peterson, Dayne Anderson, M. Anderson and Koye Gilbert each scored a touchdown. Senior Reid Schroeder was the passing leader with 18 complete passes over 205 yards and 3 touchdowns. D. Anderson followed Schroeder in passing with 1 completed pass for 20 yards a single touchdown.

Defensively, Peterson had 11 tackles and was followed by Kelton Koehn and Gilbert with seven and D. Anderson with five. Encampment, throughout the entire game, had 37 tackles and had possession of the ball for a total of 13 minutes and 23 seconds.

"Meeteetse has a good program with some tradition," said Willford. "It was great for our team to come out and see that they can play with these teams."

The next outing for the Encampment Tigers will be at 11 a.m. on Sept. 13 as they are hosted by the Farson-Eden Pronghorns.
