Sweet Marie’s Bakeshop prepares special request treats for the season

Since starting her business five years ago, Marie Christen, owners of Sweet Marie’s Bakeshop, has filled special orders for the holidays. During Thanksgiving, the Valley baker does pies, but Christmas becomes something else entirely.

“For Christmas, usually people have their own tradition. Whether it’s rugelach I’m making, or pies, or a cake for somebody, it varies,” said Christen. “We do, basically, everything and if I don’t know how to do it, I’ll look it up and figure it out and see if I can do it,” Christen said.

Along with the, now five year, tradition of doing baked goods on order for the holidays, Christen added a new tradition last year.

“The newest thing I did last year was I did a yule log class, which I think I might do it again this year,” said Christen. “Everybody, basically, picked whatever flavor cake they wanted to do and kind of pre-made them. This year, since I have all this space, I might not pre-make them. I might just make the batter, have them scoop it out, have them bake it and have them roll it out while it’s hot.”

While, for many Valley residents, the process of making a special request from Sweet Marie’s is old hat, those newer to the area are advised to come into Christen’s new location at 107 W. Bridge Ave., visit the Sweet Marie’s Bakeshop Facebook page or call at 307-0326-3244 and place their order. Requests should be placed at least three days before the order is needed.
