Middle and high school runners make it to seven-state regional meet in Boise
The snow may have been flying, but that didn't stop three Saratoga long distance runners from heading to Boise, Idaho over the weekend to participate in the Nike Cross Country Regional Championships for the Northwest Region. The championships saw athletes from Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Idaho and Wyoming.
Two members of Saratoga Middle School cross country, twin brothers Grant and Grady Bartlett, competed as did Encampment's Jarom Herring, who was a back-to-back 2A State Champion for 2017 and 2018. Grant sped through the nearly two mile course to become 2018 regional champion with a time of 10:08, beating out the runner-up by one-tenth of a second.
"Grant finished his entire 2018 season not being beaten by any Wyoming athlete in any class and was the state Wyoming middle school champion," said Rex Hohnholt. "His only defeat this season came from an athlete out of Denver, Colo."
Grady also did well, placing 4th with a time of 10:17. Just like his brother, Grant, he had never been outran by an athlete in the state of Wyoming during the 2018 season.
"These two put together an amazing season and they did so by simply working harder than anyone else. They are an amazing couple of athletes," Hohnholt said.
Herring competed in the Nike Rising Stars race and placed 7th after completing the 5,000 meter (3.1 mile) course in 17:45.
"Jarom ran a wonderful race in Boise and, through his leadership, helped cap a great season where he led our team to become the 2A State Cross Country team champions," said Hohnholt.
