HEM netters head to State after strong 3-1 showing at East Regionals

An impromptu parade is formed as local fire and law enforcement vehicles turn on their lights to escort the State-bound Lady Miners back into town Saturday night.
"I said all along we could do it," Jackie Jones, Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School head volleyball coach said smiling. "A third place finish is perhaps not what many thought was possible, but with these girls anything is possible."
The Lady Miners first took on Upton to win the match 3-1 with scores of 25-19, 28-26,19-25, 25-19 at 1:30 p.m. on Friday.
Their second game on Friday against Kaycee did not go quite as well as they lost 3-2. The fifth, and deciding, game of that series was very close and could have gone either way. Kaycee won with scores of 25-16, 25-23, 21-25, 17-25, 17-15.
On Saturday at 10:30 a.m. the Lady Miners took on Midwest and won all three games 25-20, 25-17, 25-19 to play for the chance to take third place -meeting Arvada-Clearmont at 1:45 p.m. on Saturday.
The Lady Miners won the first game 25-22. The second game was much closer at 26-24, but HEM prevailed. The last game, the Lady Miners took handily 25-18.
"The way the girls performed at regionals was a level above where they have been all season," Jones said. "Their dedication, heart, and desire has been evident all along, but it was exemplified in Newcastle."
Jones said she was extremely proud of how the team proved itself in Newcastle.
"Words cannot express how proud I am of the girls who comprised our regional team," Jones said. "It is my privilege to coach such a fine group of student athletes."
The town of Hanna gave the team a parade through town when they arrived Saturday evening.
The Lady Miners will face Little Snake River at 4:30 p.m. on Nov. 1.
