Widdison, Rider take top two spots in library poetry contest
Hanna librarian Ellen Freeman wanted to give local residents the opportunity to put forth some writing skills over the summer. To that end she put together a poetry contest.
"Ellen is always coming up with imaginative ways of getting the community involved with the library," said Jacob Mickelson, Carbon County Library system director.
Freeman was happy with the response.
"We had over 40 poems submitted from all ages," Freeman said. "Mostly middle and high school, though."
On Aug. 13, Freeman announced the winners. First place was CharlaMaee Widdison, a freshman at Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) Middle/ High School with her entry "Just Listen."
Second place went to Shane McGraw, a junior at HEM for his work, "Midnight Rider."
Following are those winning authors and their poems:
Just Listen
by CharlaMaee Widdison
Listen....
Listen to the cries,
Children being separated from their mother
Listen to the way the Nazis are laughing away,
Many try to get away.
Listen to the gun sounds,
listen to distant footsteps
listen to the frightened people,
there was no escape,
do something wrong...
you weren't waking up.
Many people cry out to one another,
Listen to their hopes and prayers
Listen to their dreams be torn apart
They hope it will be over soon.
Listen to their plans to get out,
Listen to them cry asleep
There was absolutely no escape...
Midnight Rider
by Shane McGraw
The grass blew green
And the Irish sea glistened
The people they sang
But who really listened.
Darkness crept forward
All through the night,
And the stars last stand,
It was so bright
He was graceful as an angel
As cunning as a knight
As fun as seanchai
As pretty as dawn's first light
The midnight rider came down there
Protecting the people brightly
He rode and rode looking for love
He flew through the heavens flying as a dove
He laid eyes on her finally at last
She a selkie of Irish lore
For he loved and she loved more
She was the one he'd been searching for
But just like that they took her away
Crying and yelping while he was away
He raced through the skies
He raced through the stars
He raced after those demons
That snatched her so far
He found nothing but her lifeless spirit
His heart was broken
Ripped in two
He went on rampaging
Tearing his head to shreds
For he was no good
He was better off dead
He went mad, they people they sang
Their words of torment and horrific pain
For when the bell tolls
And they art is murder
The rider of the night
Falls no further
