Scott family brings service dog to school to explain that the animal will be there for a function, not play
Liam Scott will be starting elementary school next semester. A challenge for many children, but because Liam who, at age 14 months, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1), an autoimmune disease of the pancreas in which the organ fails to make insulin; he has a companion going with him to make sure his sugar levels stay safe.
Allie, Liam's companion, is a Diabetic Alert Dog (DAD). Two years ago, Allie was homeless and in a shelter before Heads Up Hounds out of Nebraska, which uses rescue dogs instead of the standard pure breed, took her in to train.
