Lady Miners in the Regionals

Hanna, Elk Mountain, Medicine Bow (HEM) High School girls basketball team may not be going to State, but head coach Jackie Jones said the Lady Miners were not disappointed on how they played.

“The Lady Miners had a fantastic Regional tournament despite not qualifying for State,” Jones said. “With a shake up in the brackets, we ended up playing the eventual Regional champions, Hulett, and both the north and south number one seeds.”

Jones said her team was in the game until the end with Hulett.

“The game against Hulett was a back and forth battle with the girls coming up four points short,” Jones said. Hulett won 52-48.

In that game, Amy Campbell had 23 points and 22 rebounds. Jessica Nelsen had 9 points and 11 rebounds.

The next opponent HEM faced was Arvada-Clearmont. This game had the Lady Miners come out on top with a 39-32 victory. Nelsen was the leading scorer with 20 points which included hitting 12 out of 16 from the free throw line. She also had 8 rebounds. Campbell scored double digits again with 10 points and 16 rebounds.

The final game had HEM face Rock River for the fourth time this year.

“This was a game of tremendous defensive effort, and Morgan Kenneda did an excellent job with post defense on two girls standing much taller than her,” Jones said.”We took the Lady Longhorns to overtime, but weren’t able to come away with the win. Our improvement was so evident as our first meeting with Rock River was a 20 point loss.”

Rock River won 30-37.

Kenneda had 10 points and 8 rebounds. Campbell had 10 points, 7 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. Nelsen had 10 points also.

“All eight girls contributed to the success of the tournament and the season,” Jones said. “We showed so much improvement, and the girls are already focused on beginning track.”
