Legendary UP steam train brings check to Hanna for timeline mural
Steam Engine No. 844 of the Union Pacific Railroad stopped at Front and Main Streets in Hanna, from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday, April 18.
Union Pacific Railroad representative Sara Cassidy presented a check for $2,500 to the Hanna Museum board president Powd Boles to help with funding to finish a timeline mural being painted by a local artist in the new Hanna Basin Historical Museum.
The students from Hanna Elementary School and Hanna-Elk Mountain-Medicine Bow High School turned out to see the historic locomotive.
The "Living Legend will travel more than 1,600 miles during its round trip run to Boise, Idaho to celebrate the 92nd anniversary of the historic Boise Depot. The train will be on a tour from April 18-28, stopping in towns in the states of Wyoming, Utah and Idaho.
No. 844 is housed in Union Pacific's Steam Shop in Cheyenne. The trip marks the second tri-state journey since its three-year restoration. The "Living Legend" made its return to the rails last year for Cheyenne Frontier Days and the Big River Crossing event in Memphis.
The train is scheduled to stop in Medicine Bow at McFaddern Rd. on April 28 from 1-1:30 pm.
