Saratoga-hosted meet canceled, third nixed this year
“It’s just been one of those track years – you don’t have control over it,” Saratoga High School track coach Rex Hohnholt said, heaving a sigh. The meet that Saratoga was to host Saturday April 30 was canceled the night before, due to a winter storm. It was the third meet that was canceled this year because of weather, and particularly dismaying to the Panthers because it was the only meet to be hosted in Saratoga this year. There is not sufficient time to reschedule the competition.
“It’s disappointing for our seniors who worked their tails off – that they don’t get honored in front of the parents and community,” Hohnholt said. With teams coming from as far away as Snake River, Hohnholt called the cancellation “a good call,” though he clearly shared the disappointment his team felt.
On a brighter note, Jeremy Detterer got an opportunity to shine at the Wyoming Track Classic May 2. Though Detterer hadn’t originally qualified to take part in the event, a last minute cancellation from an athlete the night before the invite gave Detterer a chance to compete. Detterer grabbed it with both hands. The sophomore took fifth place in the 3,200 meter race in a field of ten runners, with a time of 10:41.62.
The next track meet will be held at Burns High School Friday, May 6. A meet originally scheduled to take place in Torrington that day was canceled because bad weather is expected to strike yet again over the weekend, and Burns moved their meet up in an attempt to avoid the storm. This created a scheduling conflict with the Torrington competition.
