Saratoga's Morgan Rempel will be going to nationals in San Diego for his Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) project, which was an end table made of recycled materials for the Recycle and Redesign portion of the state competition.
"(Rempel) scored really high," said Kaelin Crawford, the Saratoga High School FCCLA advisor, describing the end table that was made for the tech class entirely out of scrap wood with a center filled with corks and sawdust.
Other students performing well included the culinary team, who prepared a meal in front of judges. "It was actually really exciting," Crawford said. The culinary team consisted of Thatcher Spiering, Darian Williams and Max Schneider.
In total, six Saratoga High School students placed, including Gabby Clutter, who made peanut butter blossoms to receive gold in baking.
Alicia Zaragoza won bronze for her nutrition and wellness project. "She kind of tracked her family's nutrition and their meals and made a plan to improve their overall eating habits," Crawford said.
The culinary team also received scholarships, as three culinary schools offer scholarships to students performing well at FCCLA state.
