The Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD#2) Board of Trustees agreed to discontinue the district’s golf program at the Feb. 17 meeting.
As described by CCSD#2 Superintendent Jim Copeland, Saratoga Resort and Spa was funding the program almost fully, which is the only reason it was adopted in the first place. While the golfers were fairly successful in the fall, only two students have so far expressed interest in returning and the board did not feel that they could justify the cost. In order to continue the program, it would cost between $6,000 and 7,000. There was discussion that golfers that wish to continue may travel to Rawlins for the sport.
The board’s reasoning for this decision drew upon the current unease about finances at the state level. Financially, the board members also decided to discontinue membership with the Northeast Wyoming BOCES Food Purchasing Cooperative, which is requiring more mill levy than it should have and is no longer worth membership. CCSD#2 will return to a manual food selection system.
Larry Uhling, curriculum director, announced that the district will not be selecting a new English curriculum anymore, postponing that adoption until the 2017-2018 school year. The justification was that the Math InFocus program, which was adopted this year for K-8 students, is taking up too much time.
After Mike McGraw’s resignation at the January meeting, the board appointed Paul Clark to be another Area 1 representative. Clark was born and raised in the school district, he says, and now works as an engineer. After an executive session to determine his appointment, Clark sat on the board for the remainder of the meeting. Clark will hold that spot until the 2016 election season, at which point he could run to continue serving. Shelly Bradford was the other applicant.
The next CCSD#2 Board of Trustees meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m., Mar. 16 at Saratoga Middle/High School.
