Encampment students show exceptional test scores

The Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD#2) Board of Trustees appointments remain the same for the upcoming terms, as determined at the Dec. 16 meeting.

The meeting was the last before the school holiday, and Mike Erickson, Encampment K-12 principal, gave his school improvement report, which is required of all the principals. Encampment had high test scores, with only two students from kindergarten through ninth grade performing at basic or below basic on the spring Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) math and reading test.

Erickson’s goal is for 10 percent of the student population in grades 1-10 who scored proficient or below on the math or reading spring MAP to increase their performance level, his presentation says. For the high-scoring school, this would mean focusing most of the effort on bringing currently proficient students into the advanced category.

According to curriculum director Larry Uhling’s report, the committee adopting an updated curriculum for K-8 language arts has met again, dividing into two groups that will explore K-3 and 4-8 each. The groups will meet again in January.

Uhling’s report announced that school improvement plans for the Wyoming Department of Education and Advanced Accreditation are completed and posted on each school website. Interested parties may view them by navigating to “school performance” on the websites.

Hanna Elementary School was awarded a Peak Design Merit Award at the Association for Learning Development Rocky Mountain Chapter design awards. The board of trustees was presented with a Standard of Excellence Award, which is awarded to schools which have a majority of its current members eligible or holders of the Certified Master Board Member award. Joe Gaspari received an award of distinction.

The next regularly scheduled CCSD#2 meeting will be Jan. 18 at 4:00 p.m. at Medicine Bow Elementary.
