Lady Tigers take Carbon County Classic by storm

An old saying that has been adopted by the Encampment Lady Tigers Basketball Team is how fate tells the warrior, “You will not survive the storm.” The warrior replies, “I am the storm.”

The Lady Tigers took that attitude to the court last weekend with a 3-0 overall record to begin their season. Friday, the Lady Tigers played the Rock River Longhorns at Hanna-Elk Medicine Bow Jr./Sr. High (HEM) gym, 43-20. Saturday morning they played the Hayden, Colo. Tigers and won that game 46-32. Saturday afternoon, they met HEM Lady Miners on the auxiliary gym and came away with the final win of the weekend 40-16.

Encampment’s head coach Amy Clay said she thought the girls played really well. “They are not passing as sharp as I would like,” Clay said, but she blamed that on herself, stating that she used the nine days of practice working on the offense and defense.

“We will start working on fundamentals and get them sharp,” Clay said. She is excited at what she is seeing from the girls. She used a full court press against the Longhorns and the Miners. “They love it,” Clay said.

She also played her junior varsity players last weekend, giving them some tournament experience. “All the kids that subbed and did not start played their rears off this weekend and that is exciting,” Clay said.

Clay said she told her players she cannot coach heart and desire. “They’ve got it and they want it. I can coach that.” Clay added they have to keep working hard to reach their goals.

“I am really super proud of these girls,” Clay said.

In the first quarter Friday morning, the Lady Longhorns only scored 8 points in the first quarter to the Lady Tiger’s 25.

Alyssa Barkhurst scored 15 points and had five steals against the Lady Longhorns, while her sister Hailey Barkhurst scored 10 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Paige Powell had 7 points and seven rebounds, while Cassidy Little put up 5 points. Noelle Peterson scored 4 points and nabbed onto eight rebounds.

Against Hayden, it would be Paige Powell with the top score at 12 points on Saturday. The team didn’t have quite the lopsided score against Hayden, but once the Lady Tigers figured out the Hayden Tiger’s strategy, the Encampment Tigers dominated the game. In the first half, the Encampment Lady Tiger’s scored 18 to Hayden’s 9 points. In the second half, the Encampment Tigers had a better offense, gaining 28 more points to Hayden’s 23.

A. Barkhurst scored 10 points, with H. Barkhurst sinking 8 points. Little had 7 points, Peterson 4, Miciah Pantle 3 and Konnar Knotwell scored 2 points.

In the final game of the day, the Lady Tigers put the pressure on the HEM Lady Miners and by halftime the Lady Tigers had a solid lead of 24-5. The Lady Miners only gained 11 points in the second half, while the Lady Tigers gained 16. Again, the solid lead in the first half kept the Lady Tigers ahead in the second half.

A. Barkhurst was the top scorer against HEM with 10 points, Little and H. Barkhurst had 8 and P. Powell had 6. Knotwell, Peterson, Cheyanne Jordan and Pantle all scored 2 points.

The Lady Tigers played Walden Tuesday night, but scores were not available as of press time. Friday, the Lady Tigers travel to Lingle to compete in the Dogger’s Basketball Classic.
