Shelby McGuire, of Saratoga, was named Central Wyoming College's (CWC) Student of the Week for her hard work academically, but she has been excelling on the volleyball court too. A player for the CWC Rustlers, McGuire stepped in as libero during the thrilling three-set win against Western Wyoming Community College (WWCC) Oct. 20.
The Riverton Ranger reports that McGuire had 20 digs in the game against the nationally ranked WWCC Mustangs. She was named Gatorade's Player of the Game for her performance. John Gabrielson, broadcaster at CWC, said McGuire was named because "She hadn't gotten to play much and when she did, she got in and made the most of it." As an athletic freshman, McGuire helped lead her team to victory.
As an academic sophomore, a report from CWC says that McGuire was nominated for Student of the Week by Maygen Cassity, assistant professor of communication. "I have had the pleasure of having her in a number of classes," Cassity said in the report. "Shelby is an impressive student and it is evident that she takes her academics seriously. She is highly intelligent, demonstrates keen analytical ability and a commendable amount of common sense. Her motivation, energy and enthusiasm are a joy in and out of the classroom."
According to the report, McGuire, a communications major, plans to transfer to a four-year school to pursue a bachelor's degree. "I want to work on a TV set but I want to be behind the scenes; doing marketing and being involved but not in charge of everything," McGuire said. She is slated to graduate this May from CWC.
