CCSD#2 staff adjusts to new curriculum

Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD#2) is getting to know their new elementary math curriculum, and according to curriculum director and facilities manager Larry Uhling, the teachers still have some concern.

Uhling said that in order to help educators, a trainer from Math In Focus, the curriculum adopted this year, will visit in November. Uhling has put together a committee to work on a new English Language curriculum, looking at the top two scoring districts in Wyoming, Sheridan County School District No. 2 and Park County School District No. 1, as models. According to Uhling, those districts’ teachers have built the curriculum themselves based on state standards.

From the CCSD#2 Board of Trustees meeting on Monday until the next one, teachers will have an in-service day at which they will talk about school improvement plans, Uhling said in his report Monday. The board approved numerous recreational and activity hirings, including new Saratoga High School (SHS) speech and debate head coach Jacob Mickelson and SHS boys basketball head coach Jason Williams.

At the meeting, the board recognized 10 students who received Wyoming High School Activities Association Sportsmanship Award letters, which recognize sportsmanship based on reports from officials at games. Students in CCSD#2 that were nominated include Rodrigo Escobedo, of Saratoga football, Alyssa Barkhurst, of Encampment volleyball, McKenzie Powell, of Encampment volleyball, Hailey Barkhurst, of Encampment volleyball, Meredith Lincoln, of Saratoga volleyball, Mati Love, of Saratoga volleyball, Sierra Schutte, of Saratoga volleyball, Sarah Burton, of Saratoga volleyball, Darby Bowen, of HEM volleyball and Haley Clark, of HEM volleyball.

Mark Shipp, principal of Hanna, Elk Mountain and Medicine Bow Elementary Schools announced that Medicine Bow Elementary will host a fall festival on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and Elk Mountain Elementary will host a pumpkin patch and auction at 6 p.m. on Oct. 29.

The next regular CCSD#2 Board of Trustees meeting will be at Encampment K-12 at 4 p.m. on Nov. 16.
