“You only get to shine in front of your home people once a year,” Saratoga Cross Country Head Coach Rex Hohnholt said. At the Saratoga Cross Country Invitational on Friday, the runners had some of their best times.
Notably, Jeremy Detterer finished in second place on the course set up at the Saratoga Golf Course. He finished with a time of 18 minutes, 3 seconds with no one in sight behind him. According to Hohnholt, “Jeremy ran as good as race as he ever had.”
The rest of the varsity boys runners each finished about a minute faster than they did on this course last year, though this was Darian Williams’ first time running it. Gage Bartlett was the Panther behind Detterer, finishing with a time of 18:59. Aaron Kerbs came next with a time of 19:27, followed by Williams running 19:41.
Hohnholt said that Ashlynn Johnson had been sick this week, though the illness did not stop her from finishing 10th at the race. Hohnholt said Katie Loose ran 1 minute and 10 seconds faster than she had before, finishing in 8th on Friday. According to Hohnholt, Loose and Johnson “split up” the Wyoming Indian and Pine Bluffs teams. Their times were significant because it indicates that they are competitive at the state level, with Wyoming Indian and Pine Bluffs boasting some of the best teams in Wyoming.
Hohnholt admits that the surge of fast times could indicate a home turf advantage, and from here he plans to train the athletes with fast paces and uphill exercises.
