Sealcoating begins, grass fire at Shively Field

A sealcoat and striping of the taxiways and ramp at Shively Field was completed last week and airport manager Kim Lorenzen said that the contractor performed exceptionally well. The sealcoat project is part of WYDOT’s maintenance program for Wyoming airports.

A small grass fire was ignited by a broken low-voltage lamp on the runway at Shively Field late in the night on July 26. The fire was called in at 11:13 p.m and Saratoga fire crews responded, dousing the fire within minutes.

Lorenzen said he was surprised the low-voltage system light could start a fire, but the incident was taken care of quickly and no additional damage occurred to the lighting system or the runway.

After difficulties arose with aggregate sourcing and the original contract to resurface the taxiway, new bids for the project were to be opened at a public meeting Tuesday.

The rebids should address the issues with materials to be used for the project and where they will be sourced from. State permits have been obtained for two gravel pits close to Saratoga that can provide suitable materials for the resurfacing project, according to Town Clerk Suzie Cox.

At the Aug. 12 meeting, the airport board also decided on how and where to number hangars at the airport to make it easier for emergency services to locate them and help with identification for insurance purposes.
