Right on target

This year the town of Encampment has a 'refurbished' archery range that many feel will get increased usage this season.

Bob Kelley, resident of Encampment, explained how the public archery range that has been around for 25 years has needed some significant updating.

"The town has been very good supplying all of the materials and this year they finally wore out," said Kelley. "We have replaced centers of them over the years but finally the whole backstops needed to be replaced."

Most of the equipment was donated from groups throughout the community, according to Kelley.

"I approached the town and they went along with re-building all of the backstops, Kelley stated. "Then we started talking to other people and Saratoga Gun Club has donated these 3-D targets and AmeriGas is going to donate another one of these small bag targets and another broad head target. "

The 3-D targets are a new addition to the range, and Kelley thinks that it will be a great addition that many will want to use.

"From now until September there will hardly be a night down here that you won't see three, four or five vehicles here," said Kelley. "Especially now that we have the animals down here we will have a lot more coming down."

Kelley notes that although this range is located in Encampment, people from other communities use the equipment as well.

"It's a community range -we have people from Saratoga come down here. Matter-of-fact, first people to shoot these backstops after I installed them this year was three people from Saratoga and I was very happy to see them come down."

If interested in using the archery range with the 3-D animals, they will be located in a locked storage building on the property that was donated by Williams Field Service.

"It's going on a honor system," said Kelley. "Their responsible to put the targets [3-D animals] away after they shoot and any of the bag targets if they are out.

One must get a key from either the Town Clerk in Encampment. If it is after 5 p.m., call Bob Kelley, Greg Salisbury, Bob Dale or Bob Wright to get a key. According to Kelley, their numbers will be listed on the storage building at the archery range.
