The Saratoga Middle High School Track team had two track meets last week. The Rawlins Invite was postponed April 17 because of a major snowstorm. The Saratoga team traveled to Rawlins to compete on April 22.
In Rawlins the girls track team place fifth, with the boys placing third.
On Friday, the SMHS Track team traveled to Douglas to compete.
The girls team placed 15th and the boys placed ninth.
Considering the fact that at both meets, the team was competing against 3A schools in many events, they did well.
Head Coach Rex Hohnholt said is was good to get two meets under their belts last week as it gave him a good opportunity to see how the team was doing – especially with the team hosting their own meet this weekend.
Saratoga is hosting the Burt Willford Invite on Saturday beginning at 9:30 a.m. The meet was named in honor of Willford, long-time physical education teacher and coach at Saratoga Middle/ High School.
Willford passed away in 2014.
Hohnholt was quite impressed with Andrew Oiler’s performance in the pole vault this week. In Rawlins he vaulted 12 feet and in Douglas he vaulted 11’ 9”. Hohnholt was happy with the consistency in Oiler’s pole vault, especially considering the weather on Friday. Oiler qualified for state in Rawlins and Douglas in the pole vault event.
Hohnholt said the pole vault event was delayed because of high winds and when Oiler competed it was still difficult. “He did a really nice job,” Hohnholt said of Oiler. “He didn’t let the wind affect him.”
Oiler took third place in Douglas and second place in Rawlins.
Hohnholt was also impressed with the 4x100 meter relay team of Marshal Hill, Alex Zeigler, Riley Sandilands and Jaxon King.
“It was the first time they competed and they qualified for state,” Hohnholt said. The team only had a week to prepare for the Douglas meet in the 4x100 meter relay.
Most of Hohnholt’s team saw improvement of their performances over the last two weeks, according to the statistics.
