Lizzy's perfekt column

This newspaper is my 501st issue of the Saratoga Sun. I know this, because we were talking about it the other day and I decided to take the time to add it up.

In 19 short weeks, I will have completed 10 years at the Saratoga Sun.

I say “short weeks”, because since I started working at the Saratoga Sun, boy does time fly.

My weekly joke is if I put out a perfect paper, I will retire. Well, as you can clearly see, retirement will have to wait.

Earlier this month as I was taking photos at prom, I realized that I have been following the seniors since they were in second grade.

The first basketball photo I took that turned out halfway decent was of Jace Berger at a Utah Jazz junior basketball league. Saturday, I was taking photos of his nephew Burris, when I remembered that. Jace is now a junior in high school.

A lot has changed since I came to work at the Saratoga Sun and began my quest for “imperfection”.

I have never been a perfectionist – I don’t have the patience to always dot the “t” and cross the “i”.

This job has changed a lot of that, but I still make mistakes.

Everyone does.

How we handle those mistakes defines who we are. We can either bury our errors, or grow from them. Sure, it is embarrassing, but I believe I am a better person for it.

Last week I misidentified a person. I was mortified by my mistakes. It was not the first time I have done that and I am sure it won’t be the last. I remember reading the Saratoga Sun before I worked here and they always spelled my name and my son’s name wrong. It irritated me, so I try to make the extra effort to get it right, but it doesn’t always work out that way.

Working at a newspaper has its benefits, like meeting a lot of people, but it has its downfalls too – like being so sure of a name and then getting it wrong.

Most people are very forgiving when they call and I really appreciate that. We want you to call when we make a mistake because if we don’t know we made an error, we can’t correct it.

So rest assured, because I am human, and not perfect, I will probably be working at the Saratoga Sun for a few more years.
