Red Cross workers noticed something interesting in Louisiana as they were responding to the Hurricane Katrina disaster; many of the college students in their shelters had grabbed a pillowcase and filled it up with basic necessities when they had evacuated from their dorms. Ten years later the idea has evolved into a Disney-sponsored program by the Red Cross to teach emergency preparedness to children aged nine to 11 all across America.
Ari Denson of Americorps, was at the Saratoga Elementary School Thursday to teach the course to the third through fifth grade classes which included techniques the students can use to remain calm in an emergency and ways they can plan ahead for themselves and their family in case of a fire or other disaster. At the end of the course each student was given an official Pillowcase Project pillowcase for them to use for their own disaster preparedness kits.
