Grapplers place six at Don Runner Invite

In the first conference meet of the year, the Saratoga Panther wrestlers got a chance to see how they rank in the state.

Six of the eight wrestlers placed. Thomas Ingraham grabbed the first place trophy for the 132-pound weight class, the largest class of the tournament with 25 grapplers.

With his win, Ingraham was also head coach Jared Mason's player of the week.

Hunter Mason placed second in the meet, losing to Ingraham.

With three wrestlers in the same class, coach Mason said he has to deal with losses like that with a quality team.

"You are excited for one and disappointed for the other," coach Mason said.

Chaze Wiant placed second in the 138-pound weight class, with Kyle Bartlett placing sixth.

Wiant fell to a two time state champ, but still had a great tournament, coach Mason said.

Thatcher Spiering placed second in the 145-pound weight class. He beat the state runner up only to face the three-time state champion James Teichert, of Cokeville. Teichert won by decision 7-2.

"(Spiering) battled right there with (Teichert). It was good to have a guy in the finals [in that weight class]," coach Mason said.

Daynon Mowry fought back from a loss in the semi-finals to win third place, coach Mason said. Mason was impressed with Mowry's win against Jason Fossett, of Rawlins, as Mowry won by decision 6-4.

Mason said the team is still struggling with the bottom, but he still believes the team is in a good place and on a good path.

With continued drills and concentrating on their weaknesses Mason is looking forward to see how they match up in the Lingle tournament. Lingle features teams from the east side of the states and teams from Nebraska.

All in all, Mason is excited about where his wrestlers are at. They placed better at the Don Runner Invite in Pavillion than they did last year.

The next match in Lingle begins at 9 a.m., Friday.
