Serving the Platte Valley since 1888
Herbert Douglas Viner passed away on Jan. 14, 2015.
Herbert was born July 25, 1928 in Laramie, the first son of Frank Lott Viner Jr., and Aleen Fanning Viner. He served on board the USS Alabama at the very end of WWII and lived nearly all of his life in West Laramie.
Mr. Viner was the custodian at the University of Wyoming’s Coe Library for nearly 30 years. His first job at UW was moving books from the old library in the Aven Nelson building into the new library, all by hand, mainly using wooden milk crates.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mildred whom he cared for diligently during her extended illnesses. He is survived by his two sons, Gary (Mari) and Kim (Barbara), both of Laramie; his granddaughter Kecy (John) Viner, of Denver, Colo., and grandson Kyler, of Laramie, as well as one great-grandson. Herb also had many in-laws in the Saratoga Valley, where he married Mildred Jean Wiant in 1949.
Herb was especially grateful for the many friends that he made after he joined Laramie Odd Fellows Lodge and Rebekahs more than two decades ago. He held several offices in both lodges including Noble Grand. He also appreciated the wonderful care that he was provided by the staff at Spring Wind.
Herb will always be remembered as an even tempered, kind man whose greatest comforts in his later years were his two dogs Zoey and Maggie.
Cremation has taken place and at his request no services will be held.
Donations to honor his memory may be made to Hospice of Laramie or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in his wife’s name.
