Living quarter trailers fee increase in affect

The fee for registering trailer houses increased effective Jan. 1, 2015. Cindy Baldwin, Carbon County Treasurer said campers, horse trailers and toy haulers with living quarters increased from a flat $15 state fee to a variable state fee, which could be up to $60 per year. This is the same fee scale that is already used for other trailers.

The fee will be based on the manufacturer’s published weight, if available.

Carbon County Clerk Gwynn Bartlett said the Clerk’s office will require a weight before issuing a title for trailers, to help the Treasurer’s office with registration.

If the owner of the trailer has not presented a certified weight slip for the trailer and the prior title has no weight listed, the Clerk or Treasurer’s office may be able to assist the customer in finding a weight or estimating one. It is recommended that the customer have their trailer weighed before putting personal items in it and coming to the courthouse for titling and licensing.

Trailer owners can dispute the estimated weight used to calculate the fee by providing a certified weight slip.

A change in state law passed during the 2014 legislative session is the reason for the increase, Bartlett said.

State lawmakers believed the increased state fee for these type of trailers was long overdue, Bartlett added.

The renewal notices cards for registrations expiring in January 2015 will be updated to reflect the change.

The fees collected by the counties are sent to the State of Wyoming Department of Transportation.
