Tenacious defense leads Lady Tigers to impressive first outing

The Encampment Lady Tigers begin their 2014/15 season with a sparkling 3-0 record after sweeping non-conference opponents at the Carbon County Classic.
Head coach Amy Clay said she was particularly impressed with her team's performance in the beginning of the year.
"I'm pleased with the teamwork we've exhibited to start the season, everyone played hard and contributed to our success," Clay said.
The Encampment Lady Tigers powered through the Rock River Lady Longhorns 53-28 season-opener victory. The Lady Tigers controlled the boards with 29 team rebounds and handed out 14 team assists.
Alyssa Barkhurst lead the Lady Tigers with 23 points and 5 steals, while Cassidy Little contributed 11 points, 7 assists and 7 rebounds.
Micaiah Pantle had a respectable performance in her varsity debut with 5 points, 4 rebounds and no turnovers.
"I threw a lot of new things at them the first two weeks of practice and they responded well," Clay said.
The Lady Tigers put on a defensive clinic in game two of the Carbon County Classic against the Hayden High School Lady Tigers (Colo.), as the Encampment Lady Tigers won 50-23.
After a tight 5-4 first quarter, Encampment held Hayden scoreless in the second quarter. Encampment went on outscore Hayden 39-7 until midway through the fourth quarter. A late push by Hayden was not enough as the Lady Tigers picked up their second victory.
Little and Barkhurst once against lead the Encampment Lady Tigers with 16 and 13 points, respectively.
The final outing of the tournament for the Encampment Lady Tigers turned out to be their closest game of the weekend - narrowly defeating the Hanna/Elk Mountain/Medicine Bow (HEM) Lady Miners 33-27.
Despite shooting poorly from the field, Clay said her team was able to come out on top by playing fantastic defense.
Little and Pantle both put up 8 points while Konnar Knotwell knocked down 7 points.
"I'm pleased with the team work we've exhibited to start the season, everyone played hard and contributed to our success," Clay said.
The Lady Tigers head to Lingle for a two-day tournament on Dec. 19. Opponents and game schedules for this weekend's games were not available at press time.
