Alan Carter Braga passed away on August 28, 2014 at 11:50 am at the Wyoming Medical Center in Casper, WY. Funeral services will be held September 2, 2014 at Calvary Baptist Church where he is a member, at 10:30 am. Visitation will be at 9:30 am at the church prior to the service. Burial will be at Highland Cemetery.
Alan was born in Rupert, Idaho on May 20, 1934 to Jesse and Julia (Lundy) Braga. He grew up on a farm near Paul, ID and attended school in Paul. In 1950 he and his family moved to Union, Iowa where he graduated from High School in 1952.
Following graduation, he moved to Des Moines where he worked for Look Magazine and International Harvester. On June 11, 1955, he married Martha E. Packer. They live in the Des Moines area until he was transferred to Montezuma, IA by IH for a few months. Then Uncle Sam called him to the U.S. Army from 1957-1959 with his basic training at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas and the remainder of his service time at Fort Hood, Texas in the 2nd Missile Command.
After service, Alan completed his education in 1962 with a BA in Business from Drake University. He was employed by Iowa Des Moines National Bank from 1962 until 1974 at which time the couple moved to Eldora, Iowa to take over the management of family farms in that area.
While in Eldora, they were very involved in the activities of the First Baptist Church where Alan served at various times as Sunday School Teacher, Youth Sponsor and Deacon. During his early years in Eldora Alan took flying lessons and enjoyed the reality of that long time dream obtaining his private license, commercial license and instrument rating.
After vacationing in the Snowy Range area of southeastern Wyoming for over 30 years, it was decided this was the area for retirement. So, in the fall of 1997, the couple moved to Cherokee Meadows near Encampment, WY where they lived until moving to Primrose Retirement Village in Casper in October 2011.
Alan enjoyed the beauty of the mountains and the wildlife of the area. He was very active in all phases of the Encampment Community Choir from 1997-2011, He served as a volunteer at the Grand Encampment Museum for many years and on the Board for one term. He was involved with the Friends of the Encampment-Riverside Library and served as president of that organization for several years. Alan readily helped Martha with Her Aunt Martha's This 'n That gift shop business from 2003- 2013. He was a member of the North Park Baptist Church in Walden, CO where he served as Sunday School Teacher for the Adult Class and Church Treasurer.
Alan is survived by his wife, Martha, of 59 years, brother-in-law Neil Hopkins in Austin, TX, sister-in-law Elinor (Tom) Gray in Des Moines, IA, sister-in-law Bertha Hardisty in Honolulu, HI and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister
