Wyoming farm life and the sport of golf will unite together at the 19th annual Encampment/Riverside Cow Pie Open Golf Classic this Saturday.
This unique golf tournament takes place at an Encampment cow pasture, and includes large buckets set in the ground as course holes. More than 90 golfers are already signed up, and community members are welcome to watch the players at work.
The tournament tees off at 10 a.m. Saturday, and all duffers should gather at the Hole 19 clubhouse, the big log house with a green roof, located seven blocks west of the highway on Fourth Street. Personnel will be on site by 9 a.m. to sign in golfers and hand out shirts.
The Cow Pie Open’s golf course is a 10-hole Par 3 course, with two groups of five golfers playing off each tee box, and there is a blind draw, two-person team score format. Required to play is a $30 entry fee, which includes a shirt, beverages and a barbecue at Grandview Park in Encampment.
“We have a few openings still available, and it takes about three-and-a-half hours to play the course,” said organizer Jim McKinney. “We’ll also have a Hole #8 that is worth $500. After the tournament we’ll have a barbecue at Grandview Park, where all can attend and we’ll hand out awards. People can sign up individually, and will be placed in groups after they sign up.”
There is also a pre-open sign-up and fundraiser dinner from 6-7:30 p.m., Friday, at the Grand Encampment Opera House. It is an all-you-can-eat dinner featuring spaghetti and meatballs or Chicken Alfredo, salad, garlic toast, desserts and drinks for $7 a plate.
All proceeds from the dinner and golf tournament this year go toward Encampment K-12 School’s ProStart and FCCLA programs.
“This year we’re playing for the Encampment ProStart and FCCLA students, so Cheryl (Munroe) is helping us out with that,” McKinney said. “We always have a really good turnout, and we’ve had a lot of repeat golfers. The dinner is open and welcome to everyone, not just those in the Cow Pie Open, and people can sign up for the tournament at the dinner Friday night if they’d like.”
