Serving the Platte Valley since 1888

Jones named VSO's Woman of Distinction

Two Carbon County community members were given awards on behalf of the Valley Service Organization (VSO) Thursday at the Hotel Wolf.

Longtime VSO member Sue Jones received the VSO 2014 Woman of Distinction Award, which she was given for more than 30 years of public service. Jones' credits include serving on the Saratoga Town Council; council liaison to the recreation board; board member of the Carbon County Economic Development Corporation and Voices of the Valley; and current Carbon County Commissioner.

Jones was also instrumental in fundraising for the Platte Valley Community Center, and currently serves on the entertainment committee for the center. She was a founding board member and secretary/treasurer for the Corbett Medical Foundation; and served as secretary for Welton Construction, the local medical clinic and former Carbon County Sheriff Don Sherrod.

Sherrod said Jones had a key role in bringing the sheriff department's law enforcement record-keeping into the 20th Century, as he computerized the office.

Jones also served as VSO president several times, both in its current incarnation and as Soroptimist International. Jones and her husband, Wylie, now reside outside Riverside and are partners in Sunrise Sanitation.

In recognition of his community service efforts, Hanna/Elk Mountain/Medicine Bow High School senior Quade Palm also received the VSO 2014 Youth Citizenship Award Thursday. The service-oriented award is given to a different Carbon County School District No. 2 student applicant each year.

"I've worked a lot with FFA (Future Farmers of America) and the National Honor Society, and I've done highway cleanups and town cleanups, where I've picked up fallen tree limbs and other stuff," he said. "I've also helped at the Carbon Cemetery, where we've planted trees, built the gate and helped move water. Every summer I go out and water the trees we've planted."

Palm, who was also recently named FFA President, will enter Casper College this fall to study animal science.
