Several students in Jackie Jones fifth and sixth grade class enjoyed pepperoni pizza instead of lessons on April 29, thanks to one of their classmates drawing ability.
Connor McGraw, a sixth grade student at Hanna Elementary, won the Carbon County School District No. 2 (CCSD#2) BOCES Logo design contest and a pizza party for his class.
The contest, which included participants from kindergarten through high school, asked students to draw a logo for the new BOCES program at CCSD#2. Coordinator Mellissa Donough said though the they needed a logo to promote the new program. After deliberation, Donough decided it would be a better idea to have a student design it.
Conor's teacher, Jackie Jones, said when she heard about the contest, she instantly thought of Connor, saying that he is a natural artist.
"This is an area he tends to do very well in," Jones said.
With the Wyoming bucking horse, an outline of Carbon County and a pen a paper, McGraw wanted to make sure he represented BOCES and Carbon County.
"I though I should include everything (the instructions) said," McGraw said.
Though he used his artistic ability to draw it in pencil, he said he looked on the internet to look at a picture of the bucking horse logo and Carbon County.
"Once Conner's came out, I thought he's got a good chance of winning this," Jones said.
After McGraw's design was chosen, the logo had to be redrawn on a computer. Like any true artist, McGraw said he was thrilled to have his design selected as the winner, but preferred his originally design better.
"I just like the shading from the county and the pencil design," he said. "I also liked the shading from the scroll paper better.
However, Donough hopes the design will go a long way to promote the new program, which provides expanded educational opportunities for students, adults and in the community.
"It's really just another way to let everyone know that we are here," Donough said.
